The Hay Team's Favorite Spots To Visit When You Are On Seven Mile Island
Here are some of our favorite spots in Avalon and Stone Harbor, New Jersey.
Concord Café and Grill – One of our favorite spots to eat on the Island for lunch or dinner. Why? Because Bob can have pizza (which is excellent) while Kaye has their fabulous Caribbean Chicken Caesar Salad. It has the best bar food and also has an excellent dinner menu. Closed October to April.
7800 Dune Drive 609-368-5505 Take out – 609-368-1072
Maggie's – Another popular eatery on the Island that is open year-round. Breakfast and lunch are served year-round and you can always be certain of good food and good service. 2619 Dune Drive 609-368-7422
Brian's Waffle House – Another spot open all year noted for very good breakfasts, brunch and lunch. 2408 Dune Drive 609-967-3058
Sea Grille – A steak and seafood house with “make your own” salad bar. Very popular with both “locals” and visitors because you can choose your cut of meat or fish and how you want it cooked and it is uniformly excellent. It is one of the few restaurants on the island that is open year-round for dinner so it is crowded in January as well as in July. 225 21st Street 609-967-5511
Karen and Rei's – The Shore's #1 claim to being a gourmet restaurant. Karen and Rei's is consistently a “4 star” experience. Karen does all the cooking and Rei runs the dining room and bakes the bread. Karen's “specials” change frequently and never disappoint. Located on Route 9 in Clermont near Cape May Wicker, it is just a short ride from the island, but is well-worth the drive. Closed from Columbus Day until Christmas Eve. 1882 Route 9, Clermont 609-624-8205
Springer's – The famous home made ice cream shop which has been in Stone Harbor for years and years. A nightly tradition is to take the kids to Springer's and stand in line down the street waiting for the double scoop with sprinkles of your favorite flavor. Closed Labor Day to Memorial Day. Third Avenue - 94th and 95th Streets
Henny's – Another perennial favorite restaurant in Stone Harbor on Third Avenue at 97 th Street. Seafood is their recognized specialty. Henny's has been “the” choice for Islanders for years. 9628 Third Avenue 609-368-2929
Rock'n Chair Restaurant – A remake of an earlier restaurant on Dune Drive in Avalon. It now has an excellent menu and excellent drinks. Both visitors and the year-round residents give it rave reviews for dinner or just cocktails and h'ordoerves.
2409 Dune Drive 609-967-3300
Uncle Bill's Pancake House – A popular spot (try their pigs in a blanket) with two locations, 96 th Street in Stone Harbor and 32 nd street and Dune Drive in Avalon. When we say popular, we mean popular! Stone Harbor closes for the winter, but Avalon stays open year-round.
3189 Dune Drive, Avalon 609-967-8448
304 96th Street, Stone Harbor 609-368-8129
Coffee Talk – Definitely our most favorite spot on the Island. Fabulous coffee in multitude of flavors combined with comfy over-stuffed chairs and sofas for seating. Yummy muffins and sandwiches. Did we mention the awesome latte's and other iced concoctions. Closed from New Year's to Presidents Weekend when we go through withdrawal pains. 299 97 th Street 609-368-5282
The Windrift – Is a Restaurant and Bar combination with an Inn attached. Open year-round, it is located between Stone Harbor and Avalon on 80 th Street and is a particular favorite of those here off-season because they know they'll get a good meal and if all they want is a drink at the end of the day, they are sure to run into someone they know at the Bar. 80 th Street and the Beach 609-368-5761
Conover Market – Located on Stone Harbor Boulevard, this market is full of fresh fruits and vegetables grown on the Conover family farm near by. Tomatoes, corn, asparagus, peas etc. are as fresh as the 10 minutes drive from the farm to the produce stand. Closes November to April. 609-465-4830
Hugits Steaks and Things – Located on Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House, but just a short drive away is one of the best deli's around. Known for their wonderful potato salad and coleslaw, they make a "mean" sandwich. Their tuna hoagies are to-die-for in our opinion.
7 Mechanics Street, Cape May Court House 609-465-2323
Via Mare Restaurant– Situated in Avalon where the 7 Mile Islanders go to get their Italian food fix. Around for years, summer visitors usually eat here at least one evening meal out of seven that they are on the island.
2319 Ocean Drive 609-368-4494
Bellevue Tavern– Situated on Main Street in Cape May Court House, the Bellevue is popular with locals and tourists alike. It is particularly famous for its crab cakes, but has just about everything on its menu.
7 S Main Street, Cape May Court House 609-462-1738
Court House Diner Family Restaurant – A typical diner, but its location guarantees that it is always busy. Situated at the cross roads of Route 9 and Stone Harbor Boulevard and a block to the Garden State Parkway which is the road to the Wildwoods and Cape May, it manages to attract people on the way into the Shore Points and on the way out.
218 Stone Harbor Boulevard, Cape May Court House 609-465-8008
Antiques Etc. – A really "fun" store chock-full of antiques (reasonably priced) old china, crystal, all kinds of jewelry, funky clothing and "doo-dads". It is wall-to-wall with all kinds of things you will find nowhere else. In fact, we defy anyone to go there and not come out with something they couldn't resist. This store appeals to all generations – from teens to grandparents. 280 20th Street, Avalon 609-967-5500
The Gilt Complex – http://giltcomplex.com A first class framing and art store. They are magicians in making your art work look even more spectacular than you ever thought it could.
2089 Ocean Drive, Avalon 609-967-1100
Coffee Court – 104 North Main Street, Cape May Court House – A really neat place for lunch and breakfast. The food is excellent and also reasonable and it is our favorite place to meet friends for Brunch. I’m an especially big fan of the breakfast sausage. Situated half way between the 7 Mile Island and the Delaware Bay, it really is convenient to both. 609-463-8862
